Wednesday Service and Supper<p>Lent is traditionally a time of repentance and fasting as Christians echo the journey of Jesus into the desert. According to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and nights where he fasted and was tempted to turn away from God’s calling in exchange for an easier life. It is also an occasion to reflect on our mortality and our dependence on the grace of God.</p> <p>This short reflective service will include readings and prayer to mark the commencement of Lent.</p> <p>Participants might like to take the opportunity to organise some ash mixed with a little olive oil so at home they can mark themselves with a cross. (Traditionally the ash is made from burning palm fronds. The fronds having been used in the previous year during the Palm Sunday service. Now it is a little hard to comeby such palm fronds at home. So, if you don’t have an open fire place where you can gather some ash, why not create some ash by burning a small piece of paper in an appropriately safe place and way?)</p> <p>Ash Wednesday offers us an opportunity to affirm that life is found by turning  TO the way of Christ (which is the meaning of repentance … to turn).
