Beautifully Broken Conference 30th March in Geelong

St Luke’s member Claire, a supporter of the leprosy mission, wanted to share this conference with the Congregation.

Be inspired by real and raw stories of healing from brokenness to incredible freedom, where their biggest mess, became their biggest message.

At Brave Enough’s Beautifully Broken Conference our speakers will be sharing powerful messages interwoven with vulnerable parts of their own story, because people are inspired by our victories but they connect with our weaknesses. These incredible messages are filled with hope, strength and direction, empowering others to be Brave Enough to face their challenges and emerge stronger; to help the next person up and write a positive new chapter in their story.

The Leprosy Mission’s Lisa Sturzenegger will also share stories of people affected by leprosy who have overcome adversity to find new hope in their lives.

Lisa travelled to Nepal in 2017 on a Trek to Defeat Leprosy. She visited The Leprosy Mission Anandaban Hospital and met the people you are bringing hope and healing to.

Clean Up Australia Day Sunday 3rd of March

Clean up Australia Day
Our environment is no place to leave rubbish and debris lying around, so we’re teaming up again to clean up the Barrabool Rd Stormwater Basins.  Please register and join us at the Clean Up Australia website, then spread the word to come along and work off those unwanted pancake calories from  the pancake feast following the church service on Sunday March 3; Clean Up Australia Day.
Be visible in our local community; help us to be seen cleaning and taking care of our locality.  Our efforts are making a difference; the quantity and types of rubbish needing to be removed from our local area is gradually reducing each year.

We’d love your help on the day if you would like to sign up to be a volunteer at our Clean Up site.

Books Beyond Boundaries exhibition at Geelong Library & Heritage Centre

Some inspiration for upcyling all those books we don’t sell at our garage sales!

Eastern Hub Community Centre is proud to announce that our creative community arts project, BOOKS BEYOND BOUNDARIES, is now on at Geelong Library & Heritage Centre.

This is the culmination of a year long project with artists David, Teresa and Liz collaborating with community members to rework the book format into amazing artworks.

See the wall of illustrated, painted, stamped, stencilled and reworked book parts and the cabinet of illuminated and sculpted artistbooks plus an exhibition of assembling publications from the Field Study Archive.

21 November -20 December 

Discover for yourself the world of artistbooks and what happens when people creatively collaborate.

Supported by a City of Greater Geelong Creative Communities arts grant.

Uniting Book Sale Fundraiser Friday 26th October

FREE Disability Awareness Training Thursday 9th November

 Encompass Community Services is holding a FREE Disability Awareness Training session ‘DON’T STARE, BE AWARE’ on Thursday 9th Nov, 10am-11am.

If you or anyone you know is interested to participate in the session, please let us know by Friday 2nd November.

The session aims to promote disability awareness; and create more inclusive, accessible and diverse work environments.

This project is an initiative of Encompass; funded by Give Where You Live.

Picnic by the bay Saturday 21st October – supporting Refugees in Geelong

The Combined Refugee Action Group will hold a Community Picnic on Sunday October 21.

Everyone is welcome, and particularly African Australian members of the Geelong community who have been impacted by recent negative media and political comment.

Let’s get together and enjoy one another’s company. We are all Australian.
Eastern Beach BBQ area from 12:00 noon.

Bring food to share, seats or picnic rugs to sit on, sports equipment for games, and musical instruments.

St. Luke’s Messy Church is another space of welcome for everyone.

Two Worlds Festival in Geelong this weekend

2 Worlds Festival Geelong – Celebrating Culture

2 Worlds Festival is a unique event celebrating indigenous and western music, art and culture by bringing together some of Australia’s best talent.

It will be held at the Fyansford Paper Mills in Geelong on Saturday 20th October.
This is a not for profit event, supporting the Märrma’ Rom Foundation that is based in Geelong and who run a leadership program empowering indigenous youth.

BACKGROUND

The inspiration for the Two Worlds Festival comes from the Marrma’ Rom-Two Worlds Foundation. ‘Marrma’ Rom’ translates to ‘two worlds, two cultures or two belief systems’ in Yolngu Matha, the language of the people in Arnhem Land.

The Foundation was started in 2011 by Cam Begg and Melissa Patterson, in partnership with the communities of NE Arnhem Land. It is a leadership program to empower the next generation of young men and women from North East Arnhem Land. The vision of this Foundation is to enable them to walk confidently in ‘two worlds’. These young participants learn about the world in which we live, gaining valuable knowledge and skills that help them thrive in this ever-changing, technology driven society. They become independent and develop ‘life skills’ that enable them to live in both worlds. They will be the role models for their community in the future.

Since 2011 there have been 22 students come through the program, each individual staying for periods of time ranging from 3 months to 3 years. Yirrmal Marika, Yolngu musician, was one of the first participants starting in 2011, has been with MRF for 7+ years. He is still actively involved and one of the organisers of the festival. Yirrmal has developed into an amazingly accomplished musician for his age, performing traditional songs along with western inspired tunes sung with passion and emotion. Yirrmal has been working with mentors Neil Murray, Shane Howard, Archie Roach and Steve Teakle. He has performed at many of the biggest festivals in Australia and has won multiple awards and accolades. Yirrmal aims to set an example for Indigenous youth and to be a strong, positive role-model for the young generation.
