Sunday 5th April 2020 – Online Worship – Palm Sunday

In our second episode of Worship online, Paul shares a reflection on what Jesus’ entry to Jerusalem says about the kind of leader he is – a servant leader. In the turmoil of the COVID19 pandemic, what kind of service are you called to?

Linda leads us in prayers of the people and gives thanks for the people serving our community now, despite the risk to themselves and their families.

We meet Shaghek Qassabyan, our new Community Ministry Worker for St Luke’s.

Lent event

As the COVID19 pandemic ripples through our UnitingWorld’s partner countries, we are more conscious than ever of the need to support our neighbours who have much less than we do.

The future of our world depends on people of all faiths and backgrounds being able to work together for good. In Maluku, Ambon, Rev Jeny is working with high school students to train up leaders for our region who embrace difference, respect each other and have a passion for peace.

Today we’ll meet the students and hear about Rev Jeny’s inspiring work.

Lent Event

2 weeks ago, New Zealand commemorated the first anniversary of the Christchurch Massacre – a tragic reminder of the hatred, intolerance and misunderstanding in our communities, but also of the beauty of people pulling together to bring solace and solidarity. Today we meet three old friends – a mix of Muslim and Christian women for whom friendship across faith boundaries has proved rich and lifegiving. Do you know people of other faiths with whom you could have a (physically distant) meal and develop stronger relationships?

Cruising in November with St Luke’s friends

Princess Cruises….. November always appears to be a good month to take a well earned holiday before we turn our attention to celebrating Christmas. I am organising a Princess ‘Sapphire’ Cruise for 6 nights and 7 days commencing 10 November 2020. 

Destination: Depart Melbourne, Port Lincoln, Adelaide, Kangaroo Island and disembark Melbourne.

Cruising appeals to couples, singles, family and friends and promises a wonderful holiday. You are invited to join our cruise.

Barwon Uniting Combined Pancake Day 10am-1pm Sat 22nd February

Uniting Churches of the Uniting Barwon Local Engagement Group

(LEG) are joining forces with Uniting to host a BIG Pancake Day Event

in the center of Geelong City. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our UCA presence across our wonderful city and support local community needs.  Proceeds earmarked for Uniting Housing and Homelessness Support Services in Geelong.

Volunteers are needed for the following tasks: 

  • Set-up – Pack Up: 9.00 to set up stall/kitchen From 1:00 to pack up
  • Cooks – to prepare and flip pancakes.
  • Runners – to replenish supplies to the stall
  • Admin – to do the paper-work and monitor the finances
  • Servers – to dish-up pancakes
  • Hosts – to be a friendly presence on the day, to share info about local congregations (and to distribute any hand-outs your congregation would like to share).
  • Coordinators – to coordinate volunteers, and oversee operations at the Central City stall site, and the kitchen.

LET’S GIVE GEELONG A BIG DELICIOUS TASTE OF OUR UCA HOSPITALITY – AND THE CHANCE TO HELP OUT THE VULNERABLE IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Cadel Evans Ride Traffic information 1st and 2nd of Feb 2020

This week the church has received information about road closures and traffic arrangements for the Cadel Evans ride which goes past the church on Barrabool Rd.   The road will be closed sometime between 1:30 and 3:30 on Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd of February.

Mental Health Seminar Sunday 13th October

Mental Health Seminar at St. Luke’s Uniting Church

Sunday October 13th, 2019
1.00 pm to 4.00 pm

Afternoon tea provided

An introduction to the signs, symptoms and strategies to help a person developing or experiencing mental illness.

Better understanding facilitates in reducing stigma and fosters social inclusion in communities which is important for self-growth and relapse prevention.

Input will include:

  • Mental illness, facts and figures
  • Depression
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Post-Traumatic Stress
  • Ageing and Mental Health

The seminar will be led by Karen Spinks.

Karen Spinks has worked in Mental Health for 35 years across a broad range of areas including the acute, homeless, families and youth as well as the education sectors. More recently she has focused on Mental Health First Aid Training both the Standard and Aged course in an aim to help communities better understand the prevalence and interventions that can assist in helping people with mental health issues.

This seminar is for anyone who wants to learn more about mental illness and how to offer support to others.

Attendees will be asked to consider making a $10 or $5 donation at the door towards the cost of the seminar.
